Connecticut urged residents to enroll in health insurance as it allocates state funds to replace expired federal subsidies, aiming to mitigate coverage loss.
CONNECTICUT, USA — Connecticut officials are urging residents to enroll in health insurance as the state begins using emergency funds approved in December to offset the loss of millions of dollars in federal health care subsidies.
During a special legislative session last month, Gov. Ned Lamont allocated state funds to help replace federal subsidies that expired at the end of 2025. Connecticut is one of four states offering state-funded subsidies, with the goal of covering roughly half of what was lost when federal funding ended.
State leaders delivered a clear message Wednesday to consumers worried about coverage amid federal health care cuts that took effect at the start of the new year.
“Get health insurance, please.” said Interim Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman.
Officials emphasized that qualifying consumers should contact a broker to determine whether they are eligible for the new state subsidies and how much they could save.

James Michel, CEO of Access Health CT, said open enrollment is currently scheduled to run through the end of January, but that timeline could change if federal action is delayed.
“Our message to the public at this time is if you have not enrolled, you have until the 31st, and we are looking at possibly continuing beyond that,” Michel said.
Michel added that consumers who have already purchased an insurance plan may still qualify for the state subsidy discounts. To find out, he told residents to “call your broker.”
Consumers can visit the Access Health CT help page to locate a local broker and learn how much state support they may qualify for.
